Melena

Passage of black or tarry sticky, semisolid due to the presence of altered blood. It can be produced by blood entering the bowel at any point from mouth to cecum. The black color is due to hematin. 50 to 100ml of blood in stomach can produce melena. 1 litre of blood in stomach will produce melena for 3 to 5 days
