In this condition, fibrous bands form beneath the oral mucosa and these bands progressively contract ultimately resulting in restriction of the opening of the mouth (trismus) and tongue movements. Hypersensitivity to chilli, betel out, tobacco and vitamin deficiencies are implicated. Slowly growing squamous cell carcinoma is seen in 1/3rd of patients
Histology :
Juxtaepithelial fibrosis with atrophy or hyperplasia of the overlying epithelium
Areas of epithelial dysplasia are seen
Treatment :
Intraepithelial injection of steroids
Surgical excision + grafting
