Stages of diabetic retinopathy

1. Non proliferative diabetic retinopathy
Mild - atleast one microaneurysm or intraretinal hemorrhage
Moderate - moderate microaneurysm or intraretinal hemorrhage
Severe - any one of the following
Very severe - two of the following
Four quadrants of severe microaneurysm / intraretinal hemorrhage
Two quadrants of venous bleeding
One quadrant of IRMA changes

2. Proliferative diabetic retinopathy
Neovascularisation of the optic disc usually along the course of the major temporal retinal vessels
Condensation of connective tissue around the new vessels results in the formation of fibrovascular epiretinal membrane

3. Diabetic maculopathy
Focal exudative maculopathy
Diffuse exudative maculopathy
Ischemic maculopathy
Mixed maculopathy

4. Advanced diabetic eye disease
It is marked by complications such as
Persistent vitreous hemorrhage
Tractional retinal detachment
Neovascular glaucoma
